More Than A Market

The focus of Niagara Falls’ economic development efforts seemed to focus on attracting only private developments and creating private-sector jobs. Although this is an integral part of economic development and the long term redevelopment of this city, there needs to be an emphasis on retaining and encouraging local investments. The proposed Holiday Market has been showcased as a tool to drive economic development in the tourist offseason, but doesn’t touch on the intangible benefits this development may spring upon the residents of Niagara Falls.
Ever since the departing of the marquee regional attraction, “Festival of Lights”, residents haven’t had anything to entertain themselves with during the winter months except the comedic attempts of snow removal put on by the city. Sure the fresh effort of the United Way to create a holiday light tour around Hyde Park and a newly constructed ice rink in the Deveaux neighborhood are nice; but in comparison to the esteemed “Festival of Lights” they are pathetic. The blistering winter months are naturally oppressive to the morale of residents; how can we reverse this? How can we motivate residents to be a part of this community again? Developments like the proposed Holiday Market have the ability to inspire residents of the city’s great potential and the wondrous opportunities Niagara Falls beholds! I say Niagara Falls beholds! I say fund this project and stand behind its development through strategic national, regional, and local marketing schemes. We need people including residents to have a profound reason to stay and/or visit this great city. The Holiday Market is a piece of that puzzle to motivate locals to contribute and invest in this city’s redevelopment.
