If you were the owner/developer of the "Turtle" building currently owned by NFR, what would you develop ? and why? Some suggest reopening it as the Native American Museum as it originally was; the Turtle design is after all inspired by the Native American story of creation. However, according to the Niagara Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau, of the 8-12 million tourists that visit Niagara Falls each year, only about 35,000 of them ventured into the museum. Of that 35,000 approximately 60% percent were students on class trips. It appears that the reopening of the "Turtle" as a museum of Native American History is out of the picture; unless, you'd like to boost up the marketing and lower the admission price...
With this being said, what are the options left for this important piece of real estate in downtown Niagara Falls? Shall it be reopened as a different themed museum?
Some suggestions by the Niagara Greenway Vision Projects in 2006:
- History of Civil Engineering; Niagara Falls has a rich history in transportation feats like International Bridges, Gorge Railroads, Early Portages.
- Hydroelectric Power and Industrial Heritage Museum
- Love Canal Education and Interpretative Center; embrace the story of what is one of the worst environmental disasters in history.
- Exhibition of the Natural History of the Area and the creation of the Falls.
Although these suggestions are for individual projects at various locations, do you think any of them could fill the vacant 60,000 sq ft of the "turtle" building?
I personally favor the establishment of an elaborate and extensive daredevil museum; much more larger than the one currently located on Rainbow Blvd. This idea probably doesn't fit the bill for a development idea of the turtle museum but I do think it would attract a good number of intrigued tourists.
What are your ideas?
I grew up admiring this building as the museum it was and it should go back to what it was. It was a nice educational tool for kids back then and should have stayed that was.
ReplyDeleteAnyone with an ounce if immagination would peg this building for the first phase of the so-called "Niagara Experience Center." We've been waiting over a decade for that $100 million+ pipe-dream project to get under way....and we'll wait decades more when we could easily transformed this perfectly located building into the real thing ten years ago. It would have been a perfect start and a perfect way to see if the "Center" idea really makes any sense. So what have we done while the Canadian side has transformed itself with more than a billion dollars of investments? We left the Turtle vacant and sentanced tourist to walking around looking for something, anything, to do after they've seen the Falls.

I was excited to be able to return to Buffalo after many years living in the DC area. I brought my friends up here to see the Turtle, thinking it was still a Native American Museum. Big signs on the door say OPEN, but doors are locked and lights are off. what is going on? I was so embarrassed.
