Main St Still In Ruins

Long Vacant Jenss Department Store on Main St

Development in various parts of the city are beginning to show signs of life, yet Main Street still remains basically untouched except for a series of exterior improvements on a few buildings along the desolate stretch. Despite the route being home to the underused and underfunded Niagara Falls Public Library, and the beloved Why Coffee Shop, very little development has actually occurred After the city dug deep into the taxpayers’ pockets to construct a state of the art Municipal Building, the expected off-spin has still yet to arrive. Now with the Underground Railroad Interpretative Center and Amtrak Station beginning to be developed, should we expect business to pick up? Or will this development be yet another flop in trying to catalyze more development in the area? The key to the whole area is the removal of the parkway so that we can reconnect the gorge rim and its scenic views with the community. The removal would encourage more foot traffic into this natural park-like setting while increasing traffic along the Main St route. This coupled with the development of the railroad terminal and additional investment into the area's assets will lead to the revitalization of our long desolated Main St.
